How Long Does Hardwood Refinishing Take to Dry?
A typical refinishing project takes 3 to 5 days on site, plus drying time. You can usually walk on the floors in socks after about 24 hours, but full cure — when furniture and rugs can safely return — takes longer.
Drying by finish type
Water-based finishes dry fast: light foot traffic in 24 hours and near-full cure in about 7 days. Oil-based finishes need more patience — 24–48 hours before walking and up to 30 days for a complete cure.
During curing, avoid rugs (they trap solvents), keep pets off, and wait to replace furniture until we advise it's safe. Rushing this step is the most common cause of finish damage.
