Hardwood Floor Maintenance Schedule: Daily to Yearly
Well-maintained hardwood floors can go 15–25 years between full refinishes. Neglected floors need it in half that time. Follow this schedule and you'll double the life of your finish.
Daily
Sweep or dry dust-mop high-traffic areas. Wipe spills within minutes — never let water sit. Leave shoes at the door on rainy days.
Weekly
Vacuum with a soft-brush attachment (never a beater bar on bare wood). Damp-mop with a pH-neutral wood cleaner — Bona is our go-to. Never use vinegar, Murphy's Oil Soap, Swiffer Wet or steam mops.
Monthly
Check and replace worn felt pads on furniture legs. Inspect for scratches, gaps and dull spots — fixing early is cheap; fixing late is a refinish.
Yearly
Have entryway runners and rugs professionally cleaned so trapped grit doesn't grind into the floor. Check finish integrity by dripping a few drops of water — if they bead, you're good; if they soak in, plan a screen-and-recoat.
Every 3–5 years
Screen-and-recoat: a light buff plus a fresh top coat. Costs a fraction of refinishing and can extend the life of your floor by decades.

- Can I use a Swiffer Wet on hardwood?
- No. The cleaning solution is too wet and often contains detergents that dull the finish. Use a barely damp microfiber and a pH-neutral wood cleaner.
- How often should I recoat vs refinish?
- Recoat every 3–5 years while the wood is still protected. Refinish only when the finish has worn through to bare wood.
