Hardwood Finish Comparison: Bona vs. Loba vs. Oil vs. Rubio
The four finish families used on hardwood floors: waterborne polyurethane (Bona, Loba), oil-based polyurethane (DuraSeal, Minwax), hardwax oil (Rubio Monocoat, Loba Impact Oil), and moisture-cure urethane (commercial). For 95% of Maryland homes we recommend commercial waterborne (Bona Traffic HD or Loba 2K).
Waterborne polyurethane
Fast dry, low odor, stays clear, top-tier durability with 2K products. Best for families, pets, modern colors.
Oil-based polyurethane
Ambers over time, longer dry, higher odor. Only reason to pick it: intentional warm amber pull on red oak or heart pine.
Hardwax oil (Rubio Monocoat)
Penetrating oil + wax; natural matte look, spot-repairable. Requires re-oiling every 1–3 years. Best in low-traffic luxury applications.
Moisture-cure urethane
Commercial only — bowling alleys, gymnasiums. High VOCs; not appropriate for homes.
